INHERITANCE TAX

Inheritance Tax (IHT) used to concern owners of stately homes. It now affects millions of people who have worked hard, invested wisely and look upon their family homes as their 'castles'. 

Although there is truth in the old adage that ‘you can’t take it with you’, a starker reality is that those who survive you could receive an unwanted legacy in the form of UK Inheritance Tax if your estate exceeds a certain value. Except for those assets not deemed part of your estate – those written into Trust – the threshold is surprisingly modest by modern standards. For the 2010/2011 Financial Year the so-called ‘nil rate band’ is £325,000.
