TOP TIPS FOR MAKING A WILL
Congratulations! By checking out what’s involved in making a will and Estate Planning you’ve made the key decision to take control of your personal affairs.
Here are a few ‘pointers’ to consider, according to your personal situation:
MAKE A WILL
Everyone over 18 years of age should have one - regardless of personal wealth, gender or marital status. Make it an essential part of your financial toolkit.
VALIDATE YOUR WILL
Your last will and testament does not assume legal validity until and unless it is signed by you in the presence of two independent witnesses – neither of whom should be mentioned in the will or married to someone who is.
KEEP IT SAFE
Your validated will is a valuable legal document. It should be kept in a safe, secure place. Tell your Executors where it is – legally, they need it to carry out your wishes. If a will cannot be found, it’s as if you are intestate (without a will).
BE DILIGENT
Keep your will up to date. Ensure that it protects your current personal and financial interests and is a faithful reflection of your final wishes.
CHOOSE EXECUTORS YOU CAN TRUST
Appoint Executors you can rely on to carry out your instructions – and ensure they are willing to assume the role. Nominate a default or substitute Executor should a single Executor be either unable or unwilling to act when required.
