TRUSTS

WHAT IS A TRUST?

A Trust is a legal entity created according to the remit set out in someone’s will. It is created to deal with the estate accumulated during that person's lifetime. A Trust can be created to oversee these assets. One or more Trustees may be appointed to direct the Trust until a set time when the Trust expires - for example when child beneficiaries reach a certain age or accomplish a specific goal such as completing Higher Education or getting married.

There are many types of Trust – including Discretionary, Life Interest, and Children’s Trust amongst others. The suitability and relevance of a particular Trust arrangement will vary according to individual circumstances and it would be inappropriate to second-guess what is right for you without a detailed assessment of your estate planning needs.

If you need more than a ‘simple’ will, consideration of Trust arrangements should form part of your will review process.
