When correctly signed and witnessed, your original written will is a valuable legal document and should be kept in a safe, secure place to protect it from fire, flood, damage or loss. You should ensure that those appointed to carry out your final wishes (your Executors) are made aware of its location.

We recommend that each of your Executors is given a copy of the will with clear instructions about how they can retrieve the original when the time comes.

If the original cannot be located, this leads to delays and complications for your Executors in trying to carry out your final wishes in what is known as the Probate process.

Under normal circumstances a copy of the will is of no practical, legal use – leaving your wishes frustrated as if you had not made a valid will at all.
